Mold Damage In Your Bel Air Home
Most residents do not associate mold with homes in our area. The weather is too perfect and maybe even too hot and dry. The truth is that mold can expand and grow with even a tiny amount of moisture.
At SERVPRO, we understand that mold damage can happen in Bel Air as easily as it can elsewhere. Spores need just a thin layer of moisture to begin growing a colony that can spread across an entire home. To stop the growth, clean the affected area, and remove the spores, we have developed a procedure which works for any amount of mold, no matter where we find it.
Our first action is to establish containment. Technicians set-up plastic sheeting across doors, windows, and other entry points to seal off affected areas from the rest of the home. They also block all air vents to prevent duct contamination or, if we found mold, prevent it from reaching unaffected areas. Finally, they put air movers and fans in place to force loose spores from the air and out of the home.
Next, we remove the contamination. How we accomplish this depends on the material contaminated. Structural property like drywall is porous, and mold can grow into it. It makes the material very difficult to clean, and in most cases, it is cheaper to remove the entire section and replace it. Glass and metal surfaces (bathrooms and kitchens) are resistant to mold penetration. Spores stay on the surface and technicians clean them using a variety of wet and dry techniques with cleaning cloths and anti-bacterial cleaners. If the growth is very thick, we use commercial-grade vacuums with HEPA filters to remove all loose mold and then begin cleaning. All spores removed with the cloths or the HEPA filters are double-bagged and disposed of outside the home per EPA and State regulations.
Next, we give any remaining spores time to settle. Any motion in the contaminated area can stir up mold, and by waiting, we increase the number of spores we can capture out of the air and wipe off surfaces. We repeat this step until our testing devices show that the air content is back to normal levels.
Our final task is to lower the air moisture level and dry material in the contaminated area. We use dehumidifiers to accomplish this by drawing up to 20 gallons of water from the surrounding air each day. If needed, we also deploy space heaters to raise the temperature and speed up the process. This last part is essential to prevent a return of mold growth. If we do not, our other actions are a short-term fix at best.
Removing mold and restoring your home afterward is a task we have decades of experience with here in Southern California. For SERVPRO of Bel Air / West Hollywood, this is not just a job; it means helping our neighbors return to their homes and get their lives back to normal. If you need us, call today at (310) 572-6132.
